Cross linking simply means putting links between your own sites. There's quite a bit of confusion on this though. A link by itself doesn't cut it. Putting up a huge picture of what you're selling that is clickable is worthless. The search engine can't guess what the picture is, nor will they bother to try. A link about the wonderful state of the art turbocharged 2007 Widget Mark 96 does tell the search engine what you were linking to. You'll see our links scattered through this page, directing to subpages with relevant information. Those links should always have relevant text in them, or you may as well not do them. There are harmful links. If you abuse the system, you may get blacklisted. As your abuse grows, they'll find bigger and nastier ways to knock you down. It will likly start with the abusive site. After that, expect that other sites you own with links to and from it, will get blacklisted. It's even possible for your network to be blacklisted, which means other unrelated sites may get the same treatment. What's an abuseive site? Really read the terms of service with as many search engines as you can. They don't look kindly upon pages with lots of popups, links, or banner farms. Really, when a real user comes in, do they want to read relevant information, or see a page full of banners? The most important aspect of your sites is that they are friendly for the user. Besides search engine traffic, which is a huge consideration, word of mouth is important too. I've worked with several companies that have depended on search engine traffic through their entire growth. They had content that was interesting to their users, who then told their friends, who then told their friends. Word of mouth (or organic growth) is a wonderful thing. |
